Iraq
It seems the job is almost done.
Pretty soon, Iraq will be much the same as before.
A different, more compliant leadership, same repressive country.
A good oil-producing "partner" for the USA.
Malik Dohan al-Hassan, justice minister in the caretaker Iraqi government:
"The idea of imposing exceptional laws is under study"
Martial law would also be an option, according to this minister.
Mr. al-Khuzaei, the defense minister also has less than democratic views on insurgents, he :
vowed this week that his government would track down insurgents "from house to house and from street to street, by all means available."
"We will cut off the hands of those people; we will cut their necks if it is necessary to do so,"
His views are shared by Col. Haydar Abdul Rasool, an officer in the Iraqi Civil Defense Corps:
"Right now we can only open fire on people if they threaten us. We should have more freedom to act. We must have more brutal laws. The American laws are weak laws."
The Bush administration has the means to sell (spin) it to the American people in such a way, that it seems like a good idea...
